Abdulwahab Badrakhan in an article released in al-Arab Qatar describes the shock in Turkey’s coup saying that the army did not match the community in its deep change and that the connection among the coup plotters is political rather than military. They were ignorant of the fact that previous coups were notorious and consequently most Turks will not support any coup. The writer added that the coup plotters attempt failed also because their practices on the streets did not seek to attract supporters and finally, the writer believes that Turkey has changed and reproducing the military era in no longer possible.
Following the failed coup attempt, many European capitals started asking Turkey to respect the law and say that there is exaggeration in arrests and they all stood against reinstating capital punishment. The writer explains that these capitals said that Turkey now has no place in the EU. The truth, as Badrakhan explains, is that the EU did not want Turkey in the EU because its rule is military and its economy is not organized. They used to refer to the Kurdish issue as an example of the lack of democracy then they said that Turkey is a Muslim country and finally some EU countries gave their final decision after the Turkish-Israeli dispute.
For Turkey, the writer adds, what is more important is its relation with the US and its membership in NATO. These two did not have democracy as a precondition to deal with Turkey.
The US coordinated with Turkey in the start of the Syrian crisis but soon disappointed it when it accepted the Iranian role in Syria in cooperating with Assad regime to attract terrorists to Syria. NATO and the US did not support Turkey’s plan to establish a safe in Syria and left it alone even after its dispute with Russia.
With weakening Turkey and isolating it, the US then the Russian support of Syrian Kurds increased. At the time Turkey was trying to face any divisions and to redraw its geographical map, the coup happened to perplex it, Badrakhan concluded.
