وفي تطور وُصف بالتاريخي، أقرّ مجلس الأمن الدولي قرارًا يقضي بشطب اسم الرئيس أحمد الشرع ووزير الداخلية أنس خطاب من قوائم الإرهاب، في جلسة طارئة دعا إليها الوفد الأميركي فجر الجمعة، وقد حظي القرار بموافقة 14 دولة من أصل 15، بينما امتنعت الصين عن التصويت
وتضمن القرار الأميركي الذي تبناه المجلس الدعوة إلى رفع العقوبات وإعادة النظر في القيود المفروضة على القيادة السورية، في تمهيد لزيارة مرتقبة للرئيس الشرع إلى البيت الأبيض الأسبوع المقبل للقاء الرئيس الأميركي دونالد ترامب
ويُعد هذا القرار تحولًا نوعيًا في الموقف الدولي تجاه دمشق، وإشارة إلى نجاح المسار الدبلوماسي السوري في نقل البلاد من مرحلة العزلة والعقوبات إلى الانفتاح والتعاون
من جانبها، رحبت دمشق بالقرار، حيث قال وزير الخارجية السوري أسعد الشيباني عبر صفحته الرسمية إن سوريا تُعرب عن تقديرها للولايات المتحدة والدول الصديقة على دعمها، مؤكدًا أن الدبلوماسية السورية أثبتت قدرتها على تحقيق اختراقات حقيقية تمهّد لمرحلة أكثر استقرارًا وانفتاحًا في تاريخ البلاد
