قرر مجلس الأمن الدولي دراسة طلب السلطة الفلسطينية للحصول على العضوية الكاملة في الأمم المتحدة.
وأوضح سفير مالطا، الذي يتولى حاليا الرئاسة الدورية للمجلس، أن هذا الطلب يجب أن يتم التعامل معه من قبل لجنة مسؤولة في أبريل. وتحدث السفير الفلسطيني لدى الأمم المتحدة منصور عن لحظة تاريخية بعد القرار. لكن إسرائيل أدانت المبادرة الفلسطينية. وقال سفير إسرائيل لدى الأمم المتحدة “إنه إذا وافق مجلس الأمن في نهاية المطاف على الاقتراح، فسيكون ذلك بمثابة مكافأة على أبشع الجرائم” .
وينص ميثاق الأمم المتحدة على أن الجمعية العامة تقرر قبول دولة جديدة – ولكن فقط بناء على توصية مجلس الأمن. ويعتبر هذا الأمر غير مرجح بالنسبة للفلسطينيين لأن الولايات المتحدة، باعتبارها حليفاً وثيقاً لإسرائيل قد تستخدم حق الفيتو ضد التوصية،
