It was a brave step to earn living; Om Noor, the Syrian refugee who has fled the Syrian war to Turkey, took the step of preparing sweet dishes to provide herself and her family with the basic needs of life amid absence of work opportunities for her or her family members.
The 29-year young lady started to make different Syrian sweet dishes taking advantage of the skill and training period she had in a charity for women in Idlib city from which she comes from.
She contently starts her day with a smile, she goes shopping to bring what she needs for sweet, where she seeks the best price through shopping in the market to buy the foodstuff of best offers.
“The Syrian public sweet dishes such as Hireasa, Namora and date cookies of its varied kinds that are not only dishes but a heritage and a culture to Syrians “, she added.
“My family help me in this small project, where it provides us with a living that almost covers the rent of the house (300 dollars) and simple foodstuff as red meets are often missing in our meals”, Om Noor proceeds:
Om Noor is not the only lady who challenges the dire social circumstances in refuging countries; many women prefer working at home tolerating the physical work to awaiting humanitarian aids or begging anyone.
In this respect, Om Adel (aged 40 years) has chosen another field, as she has established her own Syrian Kitchen project in al-Reyhanlı city. ” I lost my husband at the time difficult conditions befell my family in our refuging journey. Yet, I did not give up, in the beginning I made dishes for some Syrian families who find in those dishes good memories of their beloved homeland. Later, our project developed establishing my own kitchen that serves the Syrian dishes”, she revealed to us.
Despite these stories of success of some Syrian women in refuging countries, there are challenges facing them in finding their own projects starting with costs needed to launch any project regarding buying main foodstuff and necessary supplies which many Syrian women can not afford.
They are profitable successful projects run by Om Noor and Om Adel proving Syrian women are strong fighting to survive. For such women we tip the hat.
