The number of Syrian refugee children studying in Lebanon climbed 152 percent over the last three years, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced on Wednesday.
The Syrian refugee students in Lebanon were about 158,000 last January, compared with 107,000 throughout the academic year 2014/2015, the commissioner said in a statement today.
The rise is attributed to the efforts and plans by Lebanon’s Ministry of Education and Higher Education aiming to provide education for all Syrian children, it added.
This move is carried out in collaboration with UNICEF, UNESCO and some international agencies, the statement noted.
According to UN statistics, Lebanon has been hosting about 400,000 Syrian refugee children out of 1.1 million Syrians, Kuna reported.
